5Q's w/Piotr Matyja "Lock" Director
#1: Can you describe your movie and why somebody should see it?
"Lock" is a story of a girl trapped inside her own mind. I think that this movie is worth seeing because it makes us think of our own consciousness. And it's quite disturbing.
#2: What do you want the Borrego Springs Film Festival audience to know about your film that isn’t obvious from its title?
Polish title for this film is "Zamek", which also means "Lock". But it's a homonym and it also means "zipper" and "castle". And "castle" is the clue here, because "Lock" is a loose adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel "Das Schloss" which in German also has two meanings - "Castle" and "Lock". English translation of Kafka's novel title is "The Castle", but it makes sense because the book is about a man who can't enter the castle because of unresponsive bureaucracy. In our film we were mostly interested in adapting other layer of the novel, which shows how someone can get locked by his own actions.
#3: What is your movie making background? Tell us about yourself.
I used to study creative writing and did various courses on filmmaking. But this is the first true short film that I've ever directed.
#4: What was the biggest lesson learned in getting your film made?
Trust your actors, focus on what's going on and remember - core of making a film is teamwork (and preproduction).
#5: What does the future hold for your film and you?
We are excited to screen our movie at Borrego Springs! Hopefully we will be lucky enough to screen "Lock" at more amazing festivals as this one.
