5Q's w/: Barret Mulholland "Last County" Director
QUESTION#1: What excited you the most when making this film?: I think what drew me most to this story was the idea of creating a relationship between two characters, each from very different worlds and each somewhat damaged in their own way, and bringing them together to find common ground through circumstances reminiscent of an Old West style standoff.
QUESTION#2: What was the most significant film you've seen AT THE THEATER in 2024, and how did it influence your filmmaking?: I'd say most recently The Substance. Primarily because, if I ever have concerns about being "too crazy" with my work, I can look at that movie and say, "nope, you can always go crazier..."
QUESTION#3: What's an obvious and not-so-obvious question someone might ask about your film?: Obvious question - What's your favorite part of the movie? (Clue to somewhat less obvious answer - it involves someone singing an impromptu song).
Not so obvious question - When Bennet changes his shirt, what do the briefly glimpsed scars reveal about his backstory?
QUESTION#4: A magic movie genie is giving you an unlimited budget for your next production! However, you're only allowed to use it on either "above line" or "below line" resouces. Which do you choose and why?: Tough question. The artist side of me says it all goes below the line. The business side of me says above the line. I'll take the artistic leap and go all below the line.
QUESTION#5: What is it about your current movie that will influence your next film?: In shooting Last County, the thing I discovered that I really enjoyed, was bringing out the dark comedy in the story. I'm currently wrapping production on my next film and, on that one, I've completely embraced the lunatic humor of it all.
