5Q's w/Whitney Wegman-Wood "The Last Butterflies" Writer/Producer
QUESTION#1: How do your top 3 favorite films influence your filmmaking?:
The Fall by Tarsem Singh has had an influence on my preferences of visual transitions and color scheme. As for style and pacing I have always thought that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Garden State made an impact on my approach. Both of these films are extremely tight without any extraneous scenes.
QUESTION#2: What do you wish someone would ask you about your film and why?:
What was the most challenging part of making this film? I like this question because this is the first film I have ever written and produced and there were a lot of challenges and learning experiences for me.
QUESTION#3: What scared you the most about making this film?:
What scared me the most was the whole thing falling apart at the last minute. So many people had donated and were supporting my endeavor and I was really scared of letting them down.
QUESTION#4: You have to choose one to make your next movie: 1) unlimited budget but only a single take of every shot 2) Academy award winning composer, but they're not allowed to watch the film 3) A-list cast, but they're directed using only charades. Which one do you pick and why?:
I would pick the 1st option of unlimited budget but only a single take for each shot, because coming from a theater background I feel I would be well equipped to thoroughly plan and get the performances I am hoping for. I remember in undergrad we did a competition where we had to shoot on a Super 8 and do all the editing in-camera, so basically you only got one take, I loved it and I loved how my film turned out. The whole thing required extra planning, but that is my producer superpower. I am of the mind that all films should have a thorough preproduction in order to have a smooth production. So, option #1 is definitely my jam.
QUESTION#5: What's does the future hold for this film and you?:
My fondest hope is that The Last Butterflies will find its way to becoming a feature film. The short is essentially a proof of concept and I have a feature length script waiting in the wings. All of the minor characters that we meet in the short have a much bigger breadth of life in this film's universe than what we see in this excerpt and I would love to share more of their experiences with an audience.
