5Q's w/: Cedric Thomas Smith "Losing Lalo" Director, Writer, Producer
QUESTION#1: What excited you the most when making this film?: Working with an incredible cast led by Johnny Rey Diaz and Alyssia Rivera. Every day on set was an emotional journey that I am incredibly proud to have been a part of. Can I just say that a director should never cry so much on set? Especially when said director is also the writer.
QUESTION#2: What was the most significant film you've seen AT THE THEATER in 2024, and how did it influence your filmmaking?:Hands down, my favorite film of 2024 and (the last few years) is "Los Frikis". It is written and directed by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz ("Peanut Butter Falcon'). I have had the pleasure of seeing it three times and these two have masterfully created a cinematic gut punch of an experience that leaves you all in your feelings. It has inspired me to continue to better my craft and dare to tell stories that matter. I will be 325 years old and still raving about "Los Frikis".
QUESTION#3: What's an obvious and not-so-obvious question someone might ask about your film?: Obvious Question: Are you a veteran? I am not.
Not So Obvious Question : Did you really have to make a short film that is over 30 minutes long? Yes, I did. I wanted to tell the story that I wanted and not worry about any constraints. No worries, I am hoping you are crying within the first 15 minutes so the rest will breeze on by. (insert evil cackle)
QUESTION#4: A magic movie genie is giving you an unlimited budget for your next production! However, you're only allowed to use it on either "above line" or "below line" resouces. Which do you choose and why?: I don't know what this "budget" word is that you speak of but if it has to do with money, I would allocate it all to "below line" resources. I am sure that my cinematographer Rick and the rest of my team would like to get paid handsomely as well as not having to wear multiple hats in production. I can switch from director to crafty in the blink of an eye. So maybe I can finally pay myself as well.
QUESTION#5: What is it about your current movie that will influence your next film?: Before "Losing Lalo" i was having my filmmaking midlife crisis. You know when you just feel like the gig is up and you should move on? Welp, I had received a grant to make "Losing Lalo" and making this film has taken me out of that space and put me back on track to dish out tearjerkers until the end of time. Eh, maybe a comedy will happen.
