5Q's w/: Jessica McGaugh "Maid of Honor" Director

QUESTION#1: How do your top 3 favorite films influence your filmmaking?:

The film that made me want to be a filmmaker was “Run Lola Run.” I was/am fascinated by the storytelling techniques. I am very influenced by movies that experiment with humor, using sight gags, deadpan performances, and clever dialog – specifically “Spinal Tap” and “Rushmore.”

QUESTION#2: What do you wish someone would ask you about your film and why?:

I wish someone could ask me about the surreal elements in “Maid of Honor” since these weren’t scripted. I’d tell them that I was re-watching “Scrubs” the year we made the film and was influenced by the slapstick scenes that bring the audience into the protagonist’s head.

QUESTION#3: What scared you the most about making this film?:

The scariest part of making this film was the complicated blocking of the actors. There was a lot of movement and we had to work hard as a team to make sure the camera was in the right place, so we didn’t confuse the audience spatially.

QUESTION#4: You have to choose one to make your next movie: 1) unlimited budget but only a single take of every shot 2) Academy award winning composer, but they're not allowed to watch the film 3) A-list cast, but they're directed using only charades. Which one do you pick and why?:

I would choose the Academy award-winning composer. What a fun experiment to see what would happen if you put the music over the film unseen!

QUESTION#5: What's does the future hold for this film and you?:

“Maid of Honor” is part of “Womanhood: The Series” which is a collection of shorts that explore the messy, complicated, and wonderful facets of being a woman. We are in development for Season 2 of the series which focuses on women in STEM. My newest short, “Tina Tina Bo Bina,” a mocumentary about a performance artist juggling art-making and motherhood, is releasing early next year. For updates, check out jessicamcgaugh.com.
