5Q's/w Nicholas Thurkettle "Three Ninety Five" Director, Writer, Producer

QUESTION#1: Can you describe your film in one sentence?

A nameless wanderer searches for fellow survivors in a world gone quiet

QUESTION#2: What would you like the BSFF audience to know about your film that they wouldn't consider from it's title?

That this was shot with just one performer and one crewperson with no permits and only the gear we could fit in one mid-sized SUV, using sights near and along the actual 395 highway in the Sierra Nevadas.

QUESTION#3: Can you tell us about yourself and your filmmaking career?

I started my career exclusively focused on writing, and after a couple of frustrating close calls with scripts that would sell or get optioned but never get made, I took up directing in order to see my scripts come to life. Every short I direct is designed to teach me something - "Three Ninety Five" started as a way to grow my understanding of cinematography by telling a dialogue-free story and operating the camera myself for the first time!

QUESTION#4: What have you learned in the process of making your film?

A hell of a lot about operating a camera that I didn't know before! In addition, there were so many examples of the power of working within limitations, of being open to happy accidents, accepting and even embracing mistakes and imperfections, and about the amount of willpower and ingenuity it can take to get a movie to the finish line but how rewarding it is to do it.

QUESTION#5: What's does the future hold for this film you?

This is the start of our festival journey and we hope it's a fruitful one. While this just started as an experiment I've really fallen in love with the character and her world and have already outlined a feature version that builds off the ending of the short - so we'd love to put together the resources to make that happen!
