5Q's w/Randy Kelly "Recycled Verses" Director

#1: Can you describe your movie and why somebody should see it in less than 140 characters?

More wisdom about life, the universe and self-expression but this time twisted into a stop-motion cinepoem filled with cultural and personal Easter eggs.

#2: What do you want the Borrego Springs Film Festival audience to know about your film that isn’t obvious from its title?

Although it’s pretty short, my film was quite labour intensive. Even though it was conceived before the pandemic, the actual making of it was only possible because of the 'free time' that the pandemic brought about in 2020-21. It showcases many of my artistic and cultural influences…sometimes very very subtly.

#3: What is your movie making background? Tell us about yourself.

I’ve been directing and editing documentaries, films and tv-series in Canada for the last 25 years but only in the last 7 years did I start giving spoken-word and cinepoetry workshops in international schools (India, Poland, Oman, Chile, Switzerland) with a friend who is a spoken-word poet. These workshops are intense and lots of fun...and also on hold till the pandemic winds down. Creating cinepoems with students made me want to do one for my own spoken word piece.

#4: What was the biggest lesson learned in getting your film made?

I didn’t plan each visual sequence but more built them as I went along. That was fun but probably took waaaaay more time than it should have. Maybe I’ll plan a bit more next time.

#5: What does the future hold for your film and you?

Recycled Verses has been accepted into many cool festivals and has won more prizes than I expected. I’m looking forward to the occasional workshop in International Schools and sharing it with students. Maybe I’ll challenge them to an Easter egg hunt.
