5Q's w/Joey Jordan "Buddy Bot" Director
#1: Can you describe your movie and why somebody should see it in less than 140 characters?
'Buddy Bot' is a science fiction comedy film set roughly 20 years in the future, however the film has a timeless message about putting yourself in someone else's shoes that will resonate with audiences of all ages.
#2: What do you want the Borrego Springs Film Festival audience to know about your film that isn’t obvious from its title?
While our film does feature a pretty cool robot, the story is incredibly grounded and human. The heart of the film revolves around an angst-ridden teen and his under-appreciated mother, and how they must learn to find common ground in order to mend their broken relationship.
#3: What is your movie making background? Tell us about yourself.
I have wanted to be a filmmaker for as long as I can remember. I spent my youth running around with a camcorder making silly short films with my childhood friends. Eventually, I decided to pursue filmmaking professionally, and enrolled in film school at Chapman University. 'Buddy Bot' is my senior thesis film, and largest project to date.
#4: What was the biggest lesson learned in getting your film made?
It is so important to roll with the punches, and embrace the limitations and obstacles in front of you. COVID-19 hit right in the middle of development for 'Buddy Bot', so we had to adapt our story to account for safety restrictions while shooting. At first, it felt like a hindrance, but soon we realized how simplifying the film to one location and 3 characters aided our story. Instead of trying to avoid our obstacles, we faced them head-on.
#5: What does the future hold for your film and you?
Along with ' Buddy Bot', I currently have another comedy short film touring the festival circuit. My next goal is to make a feature film, so I am currently working on a few screenplays I hope to produce within the next few years.
