Laara K. Maxwell

The LAARA AWARD: For BSFF’s most inspirational film

Laara K. Maxwell was a devoted cinephile and a key initiator of the BSFF, remaining actively involved with the festival until her passing in September 2023.

Her extensive experience in the world of cinema was shaped by her education at the National Film Board of Canada and enriched through her scholarly work; her PhD dissertation in social psychology delved into the effects of on-screen violence on young viewers. Beyond academia, Laara's adeptness in film extended to her work as a script editor, where she applied her acumen to a number of produced feature films.


To commemorate her lasting impact on the film community, the LAARA AWARD has been established. This accolade, accompanied by a $1,000 prize, is given to the BSFF film that resonates as the most emotionally uplifting, honoring Laara's enduring spirit and love for film.
