5Q's w/: Enrique Mendoza "Fervor" Director
QUESTION#1: How do your top 3 favorite films influence your filmmaking?:
Pan's Labyrinth profoundly shapes my filmmaking, inspiring a seamless blend of fantasy and historical drama while infusing the harsh reality of cruelty into characters. When Harry Met Sally is my dialogue touchstone, teaching me the art of crafting lines and knowing when to let them breathe. Alien's influence is evident in my ability to create tension, anticipation, and genuine care for characters. Together, these films guide my storytelling, influencing my approach to genre fusion, dialogue timing, and emotional engagement.
QUESTION#2: What do you wish someone would ask you about your film and why?:
I wish someone would ask, "What happens at the end of the film?" I appreciate this question, especially for some of my short films, as I intentionally leave them somewhat open-ended. This deliberate choice invites the audience to construct their own final piece of the narrative, making the movie experience uniquely personal for each viewer.
QUESTION#3: What scared you the most about making this film?:
The most daunting aspect of this film was the search for the perfect actor to portray our protagonist, Fernanda. She not only bears the emotional weight of the story but also shapes the narrative itself. The challenge lay in finding someone who could authentically embody the character and effectively convey the depth required for both the emotional and narrative dimensions of the film.
QUESTION#4: You have to choose one to make your next movie: 1) unlimited budget but only a single take of every shot 2) Academy award winning composer, but they're not allowed to watch the film 3) A-list cast, but they're directed using only charades. Which one do you pick and why?:
Choosing option 1, an unlimited budget with a single take for each shot, seems like the most feasible solution for me. With unlimited resources, I could strategically employ multiple cameras to capture various angles during crucial scenes, ensuring that I maximize the potential of every shot. The key lies in meticulous rehearsal, allowing the cast and crew to perfect each take before the actual filming, minimizing the risk associated with limited shots. This way, I can leverage the financial freedom to enhance the cinematic quality while maintaining the artistic precision required for a successful movie.
QUESTION#5: What's does the future hold for this film and you?:
The short film is set to continue its festival journey. Simultaneously, we're actively pursuing the development of a feature film based on a treatment we've crafted. Parallel to these, I'm already immersed in crafting the narrative for my next project.
