5Q's w/Joe Van Auken "Safelight" Director
#1: Can you describe your movie and why somebody should see it?
Two unlikely partners try everything they can to keep their underground lab a secret, and bring the gift of movies to those who need it most.
#2: What do you want the Borrego Springs Film Festival audience to know about your film that isn’t obvious from its title?
Safelight is as much a love letter to the movies as it is to the film they're shot on.
#3: What is your movie making background? Tell us about yourself.
I worked full time as a professional cinematographer, colorist, and director for 12 years in Los Angeles and Chicago. My wife and partner was a costume designer at the same time, and somehow we never met until we both left the business.
#4: What was the biggest lesson learned in getting your film made?
Washington DC is a much, much friendlier place to make a movie than I ever gave it credit for.
#5: What does the future hold for your film and you?
I hope some audiences get to see our little tribute to the importance of physical film, and we can come back again with our next movie!
