5Q's w/Jorge Xolalpa Jr "Your Iron Lady" Director
#1: Can you describe your movie and why somebody should see it?
A 90s piece centered on an immigrant mother in the search for a better life.
#2: What do you want the Borrego Springs Film Festival audience to know about your film that isn’t obvious from its title?
That although this film is about an immigrant mother in search for the American Dream, it is also about a second chance at a better life, with love.
#3: What is your movie making background? Tell us about yourself.
In 2016, right after I graduated law school, I came across BLACK SWAN and after watching 7 times, I knew wanted to make films. I don't have any formal film education other than films I've watched and screenplays I've read.
#4: What was the biggest lesson learned in getting your film made?
I think every time we make a film, we learn something knew. With Your Iron Lady particularly, being my 4th feature, the lesson learned has been patience. Making a very personal film was actually harder than I thought it would be. Having to watch someone bring to life very dark moments of my family's past was very difficult. You know they say the director sets the mood, and I knew from the very beginning I had to treat this film the same way I've treated the rest of my films. With passion. Dedication. But most importantly handle it with a lot of respect with the responsibility of being able to disconnect personally to a certain extent so that I wouldn't relive trauma. So the biggest lesson has been patience. To be able to stay laser focused on my goal, which was to make a film to honor the women that raised me.
#5: What does the future hold for your film and you?
Ever sense I started making films in 2016, I made it a personal goal to make a feature film a year. To hold myself accountable, I keep myself busy throughout the year. The moment Your Iron Lady went into post-production, I began writing the screenplay for my next film. We are currently in pre-production for it. The film is titled MELANCOLíA, starring Alessandra Rosaldo. The film is a drama centered on a hospice nurse who is dealing with death of her daughter, who was killed in a school shooting. We begin principal photography February 2020. Through my production company MIGHTY APHRODITE PICTURES: we have about sixteen projects in development, four of which are television projects based on novels we have optioned along with several films that are under development.
